Beauty Treatments: All-Natural Home Spa for When You're Snowed In

The weather outside is pretty harsh right now, but that’s okay. It’s all the more reason for us to bundle up, wrap our hands around some hot cocoa, and snuggle with our favourite people. Even better, it’s also the perfect time to get some beauty treatments in.

What’s great about a home spa is that you can pamper yourself right in the comfort and privacy of your own home. No travel time involved, no exposing yourself to complete strangers, and you can nap after for as long as you want. Best of all, the only money you’ll have to spend is on ingredients, which you’ll probably already have in your kitchen.

Bonus: the home spa beauty treatments you’re about to get are completely natural and chemical-free. Let’s get started!

Avocado Hair Mask. Daily heat styling and exposure to the elements result in wear and tear, which manifests itself in dry, rough hair and even (gasp!) split ends. Even worse, your hair is especially vulnerable if it’s been coloured or permanently straightened or curled.

This hair mask should help restore moisture and provide additional protection.

You will need:

1 avocado

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon olive oil

Dump everything in a blender and apply to your hair. Be especially attentive to the ends, because this is the most fragile section. Cover with a shower cap, and then wrap a hot towel around your head. Leave this on for 30 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

Additional tips: besides indulging in occasional beauty treatments, it’s also good to be conscious of your day-to-day care. When drying your hair, squeeze out the excess water with a towel instead of rubbing it. Also, detangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb while you still have your conditioner in — this is when your hair is at its most slippery, resulting in less tugs and less breakage.

Oatmeal and Honey Facial. The cold weather is especially harsh and drying, making your skin look dull and feel rough — not pretty. Besides heavier moisturisers that you can leave on at night, you can also add this treatment to your routine.

You will need:

1 cup dry oats

1/2 cup warm water

1/4 cup honey

Blend together the oats and water, then pour the mixture into a bowl. Mix in the honey, apply it to your face, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and follow up with your favourite serum and moisturiser.

Milk and Honey Nail Treatment. Your hands work so hard day in and day out, and are especially vulnerable to wear and tear. Your extremities are also the front-liners during the cold — it’s no wonder they’re the first to get frostbite and become dry. Most nail polish and nail polish removers can also be pretty harsh, stripping your nails and cuticles of moisture, so you’ll do well to give them the occasional TLC.

You will need:

2 egg yolks

3 tablespoons whole milk

2 tablespoons raw honey

1 tablespoon vitamin E oil (or 1-2 ampoules)

Blend everything together, then pour the mixture into a bowl. Soak your nails for 15-20 minutes, rinse with warm water, and seal with your favourite hand lotion.

Tip: give your nails a break by going a few weeks without nail polish. This lets your nails and cuticles breathe, and even get rid of the yellow stain caused by some nail polish brands.

Green tea bath. Milk baths may be the ultimate indulgence in beauty treatments, but here’s an updated version: tea baths. Green tea, in particular, is chock-full of antioxidants. Not only that, but it’s also the only supplement that’s scientifically proven to help with weight loss.

As a bath soak, the scent of green tea is particularly invigorating.

You will need:

10 green tea bags

Water

Brew the tea in a pot and pour it into a tubful of hot water. Add a cup of Epsom salts, and soak for as long as you want. You can also add a few drops of peppermint if you want the extra energy. Dry yourself off by gently patting with a towel, then seal the deal with your favourite body lotion.
