My Top 13 Australian Designers in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2016

Sydney Fashion Week is upon us once again, and our homegrown Australian fashion designers are frothing at the mouth to make us all proud. Like fine wine that tastes better with age, the high-octane, well-heeled, and super glamorous runway event just keeps getting better and better. This year, of course, is no exception, as it features the who’s who of Australian fashion. In fact, there will be more than 60 Australian designers in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2016.

Let’s start with Toni Maticevski. He bears the prestigious title of “Mercedes-Benz Presents” designer for 2016, which means he’s also headlining the opening night. Maticevski joins the elite ranks of Carla Zampatti, Kym Ellery, Easton Pearson and Johanna Johnson, all of whom also opened the show and held the title.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is in its 21st year, and changes are afoot. Instead of its usual April schedule, this year’s edition is on from May 15th (Sunday) to May 20th (Friday). The focus this year has also shifted to Resort collections instead of the usual Spring/Summer offerings.

The reason for the change is to allow for better sales. Designer Dion Lee, for example, is very happy about this. According to Lee, the usual April date was “too late to take Fall/Winter orders and too early to present Resort.” May, on the other hand, allows the designers to present their Resort collection right at the sweet spot for when the global market is clamouring for it. Good move, Australian Fashion Week.

Anyway, back to the stars of the show. There will be more than enough Australian dress designers to fill your need for variety, but of course, not everyone is cut from the same cloth. Some of them truly stand out. These, for me, are the top 13 Australian Designers in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week 2016 (in no particular order).
