“Life is just a party, and parties weren’t meant to last.” The artist behind the mega-hit Purple Rain has just passed away, and the world is in mourning.
Prince was, in a word, outrageous. He wasn’t just one of the most talented musicians to ever walk the earth (he won no less than seven Grammy awards) — he also had the extravagant personality to match.
It only made sense that his wardrobe keep up. After all, it was an extension of his identity as an artist: just another canvass on which he could share his art. From ruffled shirts, head-to-toe sequins, and, of course, his signature purple, his style was fierce, sometimes shocking, always unforgettable.
Here’s a look at some of Prince’s most memorable outfits.
Purple Suit for the Purple Rain Album Cover
Let’s start with the outfit that was the harbinger of things to come. Here’s Prince sitting astride a huge motorcycle, in a purple tailored suit, looking you in the eye, and daring you to question him. You couldn’t, of course. You were too busy singing to Purple Rain.
Yellow Cut Out Butt-Baring Jumpsuit
Prince looked like a tall, refreshing glass of lemonade in this outfit. At the same time, he managed to give “bottomless lemonade” a new meaning.
If you ever questioned that Prince had a sparkling personality, one look at this outfit and all your doubts would be put to rest. While a black (or even white) dress is perfectly acceptable covered in sequins, Prince wouldn’t be Prince if he didn’t push it to the limits, dressing up in a sparkly yellow suit. And heels, because what else could have gone with the outfit?
Purple Lace Jumpsuit
There’s a reason you haven’t seen anyone pull off a purple lace jumpsuit (the words don’t even belong together): it’s because no one can. No one but Prince, of course. Oh, what’s that? Is it a bit chilly? Throw a white trench jacket over it, complete with varsity stripes. Does it work? Of course it does. It’s Prince.
Yellow Snakeskin Vest
Another set of three words that don’t belong together, and yet, magically, Prince made it work. Maybe it’s because of the leopard-print guitar strap. Or the afro. Or the sunnies with the extra lens, because he didn’t want his third eye to be left out.
