The $1,000,000 Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes on February 27th is the biggest two year old race in Victoria. First run in 1971 it has become the championship race for juvenile horses in our state. Past winners include greats such as Manikato, Bounding Away, Redoute’s Choice and more recently Star Witness and Sepoy.
From the first 2yo race of the season in early October through to the Blue Diamond Preludes on February 14th we get a look at all the new season talent that the 2yo’s have to offer. The best of them earn the right to compete in the Blue Diamond. It often sets up as a fascinating battle of the sexes as the Preludes are run with a Colts and a Fillies division before meeting each other in the Blue Diamond.
We won the race in 2010 with our crack Colt Star Witness. He went into the race having won both of his first two career starts but looked to have blown his chance when he wobbled around the home corner at the back of the field. He balanced up and ran past every horse in the race for one of the most spectacular wins in its history. Check out his outstanding effort here.
Star Witness went on to win the Gr1 Coolmore Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day later in the year and the following year he went to England and ran 2nd in the Gr1 Kings Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. That is the beauty of the Blue Diamond. We are looking at the future Stars of the turf facing their first big Gr1 test. The winner will take his place on a prestigious list and often go on to be a household name.
